Note:  Just to be clear, there is no &amp;quot;Grandmother Bates&amp;quot; in our own household.  This is the book&amp;#039;s author&amp;#039;s great-great grandmother.&lt;br /&gt;

* 1 c salted butter, at room temperature (do not use margarine)&lt;br /&gt;
* 1 c sugar&lt;br /&gt;
* 2 large eggs&lt;br /&gt;
* 1/4 t baking soda&lt;br /&gt;
* 1/4 c milk&lt;br /&gt;
* 1 t vanilla extract&lt;br /&gt;
* 1 c dried cherries, blueberries, or raisins&lt;br /&gt;
* 2 c all-purpose flour&lt;br /&gt;
* 2 c rolled oats (not instant)&lt;br /&gt;
* 1/2 t grated nutmeg&lt;br /&gt;
* 1/2 t salt&lt;br /&gt;

=== Preparation ===&lt;br /&gt;
Preheat the oven to 350.  Lightly grease two baking sheets or line with parchment paper.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In a large mixing bowl, beat together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.  Beat in the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.  Dissolve the baking soda in the milk, then add the vanilla.  Add the milk mixture to the butter-sugar mixture.  Beat well to combine.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In another large mixing bowl, combine the dried cherries and flour.  Toss with a fork to lightly flour the cherries.  Stir in the oats, nutmeg, and salt.  Stir well to combine.  Add the flour mixture to the butter-sugar mixture.  Beat just until combined.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Drop the dough by the tablespoon 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets.  If desired, flatten a little with your fingers; the dough will tend to hold its shape while baking.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Bake the cookies, one sheet at a time, for 18-20 minutes, until the cookies are golden and set.  Cool the cookies on the baking sheets for 5 minutes, then remove to wire racks to finish cooling.&lt;br /&gt;
