Note: Just to be clear, there is no "Grandmother Bates" in our own household. This is the book's author's great-great grandmother.

Ingredients

  • 1 c salted butter, at room temperature (do not use margarine)
  • 1 c sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 t baking soda
  • 1/4 c milk
  • 1 t vanilla extract
  • 1 c dried cherries, blueberries, or raisins
  • 2 c all-purpose flour
  • 2 c rolled oats (not instant)
  • 1/2 t grated nutmeg
  • 1/2 t salt

Preparation

Preheat the oven to 350. Lightly grease two baking sheets or line with parchment paper.

In a large mixing bowl, beat together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Dissolve the baking soda in the milk, then add the vanilla. Add the milk mixture to the butter-sugar mixture. Beat well to combine.

In another large mixing bowl, combine the dried cherries and flour. Toss with a fork to lightly flour the cherries. Stir in the oats, nutmeg, and salt. Stir well to combine. Add the flour mixture to the butter-sugar mixture. Beat just until combined.

Drop the dough by the tablespoon 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets. If desired, flatten a little with your fingers; the dough will tend to hold its shape while baking.

Bake the cookies, one sheet at a time, for 18-20 minutes, until the cookies are golden and set. Cool the cookies on the baking sheets for 5 minutes, then remove to wire racks to finish cooling.
