Ingredients
- 1 c scalded milk
- 1/3 c water
- 1/3 c egg substitute
- 1/3 c sugar
- 1 1/3 t salt
- 1/3 c shortening
- 1 T cardamom
- 4 - 4 1/2 c flour
- 1 T yeast
Filling
- margarine/butter
- 1/3 c sugar
- 1/4 t cardamom
- egg or egg white, beaten
- large sugar crystals for topping
Preparation
Put all ingredients in bread machine on dough cycle (in order given or specified by bread machine).
When dough cycle is finished (including having risen), divide dough into three pieces. Roll each piece into a 12” long rectangle; spread with margarine. Sprinkle sugar and cardamom together; sprinkle on dough. (A fairly thick layer is okay.) Roll each piece into a 12” rope; braid pieces together. Let rise on greased baking sheet until approximately doubled in size. Brush evenly with frothy egg white or beaten egg; sprinkle with large sugar crystals.
Bake 20-30 minutes at 350°.
